Do not be Afraid. Only Believe. (Mark 5:35-43) - Overseer Sung-Hyun Kim

Jesus left the region of the Gerasenes, crossed the sea of Galilee and came to Capernaum. Another crowd surrounded Him. Yet an unexpected person came and bowed before Jesus. He was Jairus, the synagogue ruler. He must have been conscious that the Jewish leaders hated Jesus. The reason he showed this kind of urgency was because his daughter was dying.

Jairus urgently appealed that Jesus save his daughter, and He went with him. Jairus was so worried in his heart. The situation was urgent, for he did not know when his daughter would breathe her last. However, the crowds surrounded Jesus and His walking was so slow. Moreover, when the woman suffering from a hemorrhage touched Jesus’ clothes, the procession stopped completely.

During this delay, what Jairus feared had happened. News arrived that his daughter was already dead. While Jairus’ heart was crumbling, those who brought the news said, “There is no reason to bring the teacher into the house.” At that moment, the Lord said to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” Then He took the three disciples who trusted Him the most and headed for Jairus’ house.

At Jairus’ house, the funeral proceedings already began. Some people were making loud noises, some were playing the flute to heighten the atmosphere, and some were weeping bitterly. It was chaotic. Like pouring cold water, the Lord said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.” They heard His words and ridiculed Him. The Lord sent them all out of the house. He brought the people who trusted Him (that is, the child’s parents and His disciples) and entered the room where the child was.

The Lord said to the child (who was lying down), “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” The child opened her eyes, got up and walked. The people who witnessed the scene were overcome with amazement. They did not merely see the girl come back to life. They confirmed that Jesus was the Master of the Resurrection and gained proof that those who believe in Him will resurrect and have eternal life.

The Lord did not permit such proof to everyone, but showed it to those who thoroughly trusted Him. Though many people still ridicule Jesus Christ and mock the promise of the Resurrection, let’s trust in the Lord’s word, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” If it concerns what the Lord has promised - no matter how slow it is fulfilled - let’s not be swayed by negative thoughts, words or situations but trust the Lord until the end. This world is full of spiritual hindrances. Since the Lord will save us and lead us into His eternal kingdom, let’s have the necessary conditions so that He can work to His heart’s content.
