The Unwavering Judge
(Rom 3:4-8)
Have you ever been unfairly backed into a corner? No matter how carefully you explained yourself, the other person kept twisting your words to make you look like the villain. That was Paul’s situation exactly. He was preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ—a message that emphasized grace over works—but certain Jews were determined to undermine it, twisting his words again and again.
Promises Are Never Nullified
The Jews put it this way: “God promised to bless us—so why do you teach that even Jews are judged for their sins? Doesn’t that nullify His own promise?” Paul’s answer was firm: “Absolutely not. The fact that sin brings judgment, even for Jews, and the fact that God faithfully keeps His promises—these two truths do not contradict each other. Both are true at the same time.”Justice Never Wavers
The Jews twisted it again: “If our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, is it not unjust of Him to inflict wrath upon us?” Paul was having none of it: “Certainly not. God’s righteousness is not something that shines only when compared to human sin. He judges unrighteousness with the same unwavering justice—always, without exception. His wrath, far from being a problem, is the very proof of His righteousness.”Excuses Are Never Accepted
The Jews launched their final attack: “Are you saying, then, ‘Let us do evil that good may come’?” Paul’s reply was unsparing: “Their condemnation is just.” Have you ever thought to yourself, ‘My intentions were good—so surely even if my methods were wrong, God will overlook it. Surely I will be exempt from judgment’? That is precisely the logic Paul’s accusers were using. The only ground we can stand on is this: to acknowledge His justice and entrust ourselves entirely to His mercy.
